A 14-member team from UW Oshkosh finished the highest among Wisconsin universities in a regional National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). Eleven universities from Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Canada competed April 21 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Paul, Minn. It was one of 15 district competitions leading up to a June 7 national event sponsored by the American Advertising Federation. UW Oshkosh defeated teams from UW Madison and Marquette University and placed fifth overall in the District 8 competition. Less than three points separated the second and fifth place teams. University of Minnesota-Twin Cities won the competition and will advance to the national NSAC in Louisville in June. “Many ideas these students come up with are cutting edge, especially in the areas of mobile and interactive marketing,” said Kathy Fredrickson, adviser for UW Oshkosh team of journalism students. In the NSAC, teams had to create an integrated marketing plan for Coca-Cola Classic. The challenge was to increase consumption and brand health with the multicultural audience, ages 13-24. Teams presented their campaigns to a panel of judges, including a representative from Coca-Cola. UW Oshkosh team members are Brian Dedering, Lindsay Harrell, Adam Hegge, Dana Heimos, Zak Hennessy, Bryanna Lancour, Jason James, Ashley Knutson, Jenna Maulsby, Kelly Mason, Jamie Szymanski, Alex Zinoviev, Dylan Waddell and Melissa Whalen. Dana Baumgart and Kevin Rau, both of the journalism department, and Fredrickson taught the class that entered the competition. A UW Oshkosh team won first place in the 2003 NSAC, qualifying for the national competition. The article was published on the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh website. |
