download research paper (pdf: 412kb)Abstract
In this project the homepages of the 11 comprehensive schools in the University of Wisconsin System were analyzed and compared according to standards of Web usability. Research results show that the schools do not use space efficiently and that they vary according to how they use their Web sites for such things as promoting themselves or providing content of interest. Design suggestions are offered for improving the usability of university Web sites. ------------------ "Use of screen real estate on university homepages" research has been acknowledged as one of the best works at the 14th Annual Student Research and Creative Activities Event at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. The homepage is the most important page on any website, and university websites are not an exception. The homepage is the university’s face to the students, parents and alumni and most importantly to the rest of the world. Increasingly, potential students will look at a university online before making contact with it.
